KI-LIAS – a research project of the WZL – Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering of RWTH Aachen University, the IAW – Lehrstuhl und Institut für Arbeitswissenschaft as well as the FIR an der RWTH Aachen.
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) has already led to changes in the work and the employment situation of many employees and is expected to have further radical effects. While AI has already been successfully applied in the field of machine automation, its use in direct collaboration with employees still faces great challenges. The potentials of AI can only be realized if the employees have confidence and acceptance in the effectiveness and benefits of corresponding applications. However, insufficient employee participation in the relevant change processes usually leads to mistrust and a lack of acceptance of AI applications. As a result, systems are either not used or only used to a limited extent. Due to the lack of feedback from the training and introduction phase, this can lead to problems in the quality of results and thus to increased rejection of the systems.
Therefore, the aim of the project KI-lias is the development of a procedure, which allows for an acceptance-based implementation decision, development, introduction and use of AI-based assistance systems in manufacturing companies. As a target group, small and medium-sized companies (SME), as well as large companies of the manufacturing industry, are considered. The internal target groups are the employees in the planning, control and execution of the production. To meet the specific challenges of the employees of SMEs and large companies, introduction processes and collaborative AI applications are to be designed in order to sustainably improve the work processes and conditions as well as the work results of the employees. Thus ensuring the competitiveness of the German manufacturing industry in the long term.
